4:40 PM CASE STUDY: Melbourne Cricket Grounds - A Model of Stadium Sustainability

Over the past decade, the Melbourne Cricket Club has implemented a series of processes to reduce energy and water use and increase the amount of waste it diverts from landfill to recycling, giving it the name of one of the most sustainable stadia in the world. Melbourne Cricket Ground recycles a number of items that would other wise go to landfill; even the hallowed turf gets a second life and has their own water recycling facility:

  • Exploring comprehensive recycling efforts that increase recycling of rubbish from 20-30% to 83%
  • Analysis of strict polices and segregation of waste via 20 different streams- including glass, organics, soil and turf and soft plastics
  • Development of an innovative water recycling facility to reduce potable water consumption by 50% and produce 180 million litres of recycled water every year
  • Reduction of electricity consumption by 20%
